Virtual reality gaming technology is already pretty good. But there are still some things missing from the experience that could make the immersion factor even better, like the addition of smells. At least, that’s what Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey thinks, as he told The Verge about what could be done to make virtual reality more immersive in the future. 

Currently, smells aren’t part of the equation when it comes to virtual reality gaming. If you want to smell something while you play. You have to be near an actual candle or something similar to give off an odor while you play.

Gamers have been anticipating virtual reality gaming technology for years, and it seems like the wait will finally pay off with the unveiling of new games that include smells, in addition to sights and sounds. 

The latest generation of virtual reality gaming technologies has reached both consumers and developers at the same time. That means users have new ways to connect with their favorite games, and game developers have access to new technologies that will help them create an even more immersive experience for users than ever before.

How Does Virtual Reality Work?

Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional environment. When you put on your VR headset and dive into virtual reality. You’re seeing what’s happening in the 3D environment from your first-person perspective. You can look around and explore the 3D world just like you would be able to if you were there in real life. 

In VR, it’s common to use motion controllers so that you can interact with objects in the virtual world. How Does Smell Enhance Experience?

A new virtual reality gaming technology called Smell-O-Vision will soon be released by the company Scentee. The VR headset will release scents that correspond with what is going on in the game and, according to those who have tried it, makes the experience much more immersive.

The idea of using smell to enhance a gaming experience or other types of media started back in 1914. When a man named William Fox came up with an idea for his first movie theater.

Fox wanted people to feel like they were part of the film so he created an early prototype for a system that would pump different smells into different parts of the theater depending on what was happening on screen at that point. It was challenging to accomplish this task and only one person has successfully recreated his design, meaning that smellies (as they’re sometimes referred to) are still rarely used today.

However, with advances in technology and research from institutions such as Harvard University’s Department of Psychology, Smell-O-Vision might not be science fiction anymore! 

There are two main benefits to adding smells to any visual media. 

• First, our sense of smell helps us identify threats and targets faster than any other sense. 
• Secondly, it stimulates memories better than anything else can because we associate certain odors with specific places or events.

Are You Ready For Smell-Enabled Virtual Reality?

Virtual reality gaming is about to get a whole lot more immersive. The company Scentee has come up with a new idea for VR games. Where the smells will match up with what’s happening in the game.

Working with fragrance company ScentAir, gaming company TPCAST has created a way for virtual reality games to emit smells that match their environments. 

For example, players might smell freshly baked apple pie when walking into an old country kitchen or be hit by the stench of rotting fish while exploring an underwater shipwreck. The possibilities are endless and the result could be absolutely incredible!

Imagine how much better gameplay would be if you could not only see your surroundings but also hear them, touch them, and now smell them too.
